Learn more about our team! Here you will find information on the Writing Center staff including the background and expertise of our Director and two writing tutors. 

Director: Dr. Thrisha Shiver

Dr. Thrisha Shiver has been the Director of the Writing Center at Allen since 2016. Her career spans over 50 years in higher education at numerous colleges and universities, and public school systems in various states. She has held the position as Assistant Director and Associate Professor of Undergraduate Education and Director of Academic Services at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Coordinator of Clinical Experiences in the Teacher Education Program at Benedict College; Adjunct Professor at Columbia College, Southern Wesleyan University, Voorhees College, Florida International University, and Cambridge College. She has served as the Assistant to the State Director of Vocational Education in Washington, DC. Dr. Shiver received her Ph.D. from the Pennsylvania State University.

Tutor: Madison Harmon, MA

 

Madison Harmon is a PhD student in the Department of English at the University of South Carolina. Madison has been with the Allen Writing Center and Tutoring Center since Fall 2023. Madison's tutoring experience consists of peer mentoring and peer tutoring at both her Alma Mater, UNC- Chapel Hill and at North Carolina State University where she received her M.A. Madison's favorite part of tutoring is guiding students towards their own new meanings or conclusions which, in turn, allows them to see their own potential & breadth of creativity!

Tutor: Christina Xan, MA

Christina Xan is a PhD Candidate at the University of South Carolina (UofSC). She has tutored at the Allen University Writing Center since Fall 2018 and has worked in writing centers at large since 2014. She believes that all writing is inherently creative and that all starting places are good places; her favorite part of tutoring is sharing experiences with students and tapping into their individual creativity as they craft unique papers and projects together.
